Community Profile

Camp Verde, Arizona.

As a result of being geographically centered in the state’s lush Verde Valley, we have a moderate climate.  The sparse population of less than 11,000, 46 square miles of land and many small farms and ranches enhance our rural, western lifestyle. The waterways that meander throughout our quiet community provide an abundance of riverfront properties, recreational opportunities and are a habitat for wildlife, such as bald eagles, hawks, blue heron, beavers and otters.  Towering above the valley are majestic mountains that provide a scenic view of unsurpassed beauty.

As the oldest community in the valley, the Town has a unique history, dating back to the early 1860's.    Settlers first began migrating into the Verde Valley because of the mining industry.   The first military establishment was a temporary post overlooking the farms at West Clear Creek.   In 1865, the next post, Camp Lincoln was established.   In 1865 the name was changed to Camp Verde.  The post was moved to its present day site in 1871, due to the onset of a malaria outbreak.   In 1878, the name was changed to Fort Verde to signify permanence.    The fort was occupied from 1871-1891; with the post officially closing in April of 1890.

Over the years the community recognized the value of protecting and preserving this historic site, which is what, prompted a request that it be established as a Historic State park, in 1970.  Today, visitors can tour the four remaining adobe buildings, one of which is a museum with exhibits and displays that portray life on the frontier.

The phrase "Camp Verde is Arizona's best-kept little secret" is very illustrative of why residents call Camp Verde their home Town.

Principal Economic Activities

Construction, ranching, farming, light industry, trade and service, a casino and government agencies all serve as the Town's major employers.

Attractions and Recreational Activities

Residents and visitors are able to enjoy outdoor activities such as horseback riding, four wheeling, jeep tours, hiking, camping, canoeing, kayaking and fishing.

Attractions include Montezuma Castle National Monument, Montezuma's Well, the Verde River, Fort Verde Historic State Park, Out of Africa Wildlife Park and  Cliff Castle Casino, which has an arcade, other children's activities, a bowling alley and several restaurants.

Community Facilities

For such a small rural community Camp Verde is fortunate to have the following amenities: a swimming pool, soccer and baseball fields, picnic sites, parks (including skateboard park) a library and a satellite library facility in nearby Lake Montezuma. The Town is currently working on obtaining land for a community park.

Additionally, several years ago, Yavapai College began scheduling college courses at our local high school.
